I was born with very little hearing due to a virus my mother had when she was pregnant with me. At two years old, I lost all my hearing and became profoundly deaf. I was officially diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss in both ears. My parents first heard about cochlear implants and asked me if I wanted them and I did. My parents chose Advanced Bionics because they were recommended by doctors here. I was implanted in my right ear in 2003, because at that time, they only allowed one ear to be implanted. I am now 22, and my internal device from 20 years ago finally failed. I recently had surgery to remove the failed device and had a new one implanted. I had the option to implant both ears but I chose to keep onlye my right one implanted because I felt that I had done well with one cochlear implant. I continue to choose Advanced Bionics because it’s the company that I know and have worked well with, plus they have a cochlear implant that allows me to be out in nature and swim without damaging my cochlear implant. I love having a cochlear implant because I am able to communicate with my family members, especially my younger siblings. I love hearing what the world sounds like outside with the breeze, the birds chirping, and the animals making their sounds. Most of all, I love listening to music.
