I was born profoundly deaf in both ears. I received my first cochlear at the age of 13 months, and my second at 6 years old. In the last month I have switched and my second ear now uses the CROS.
Since I was so young at implantation, my parents chose AB for me. That said, I choose to stay involved with AB and our CI community.
How have cochlear implants impacted my life? The answer to this question changes depending on where I’m at in life. Looking back, it allowed me the ability to connect as a child, develop my own identity as a teen, did not limit my choices as a college student. And now, my deafness and my cochlear + CROS makes me a better teacher. I am currently in my second year of teaching as an elementary special education teacher.
