Unitron’s first fit strategy keeps the focus on client experience

Starting at a full target fit isn’t always what’s best for a new hearing instrument wearer.

Kitchener, Canada — Unitron’s Discover platform increases new wearer acceptance and satisfaction by starting with a hearing experience that naturally reintroduces fuller sound, allowing the wearer to adapt to better hearing at pace most comfortable to them.

Age-related hearing loss generally happens gradually, over a period of many years. During this time, the brain adapts to not receiving, and processing, the same volume and variety of sounds. When a new wearer is fit with hearing instruments starting at full target, or optimal fit, sounds may seem overwhelming, or harsh to the wearer.

“There’s an innate tension between wanting to give a person the best speech intelligibility and the reality of what they are ready to hear. Our central auditory systems rewire themselves to respond to the sound quality we’ve been used to hearing. We need to adapt to a hearing solution much in the same way we adapt to hearing loss. Luckily, since our auditory system is plastic, with hearing instruments we can regain the ability to receive, process and respond to sound within a matter of weeks.” explains Don Hayes, Director of Clinical Research.

Optimizing workflow with Unitron TrueFit™ fitting software

Set up is quicker too, allowing more time with patients and less time spent in fitting software. A new workflow in Unitron TrueFit software ensures all the necessary settings are configured properly for a starting point that will sound great.

That’s where our Automatic Adaptation Manager (AAM) comes in. AAM starts with the acoustic transparency that new hearing instrument wearers prefer, then automatically transitions to the industry standard fitting formula target for the greatest long-term benefit. This gradual transition allows the auditory system to receive, process, and accept sounds that have been missing for an amount of time. The process is seamless for both the hearing care professional and the client.

“This is a game-changer for the hearing care journey. When we partner with wearers to improve their hearing in a more natural, comfortable way, their acceptance and satisfaction increases,” says Douglas Baldwin, Senior Manager Global Learning and Development.
