My name is Presley Roberts, and I have had AB cochlear implants for 10 years. When I was 4 years old, I failed my hearing test. A few months later, I had a recheck with an audiologist. That is when my family and I discovered that I was profoundly deaf in my right ear. My left ear had moderate loss at the time. I began wearing a hearing aid, which helped for a little while. Around Thanksgiving, my parents started to notice I wasn’t responding and hearing as well. Following a second recheck, it was determined that I was a candidate for cochlear implants.
The audiologist we were seeing at the time did not have experience with cochlear implants, so we switched to a doctor with more experience. So my cochlear implant journey began. My first surgery was on New Years Eve of 2013. We said “Happy New Ears” to celebrate!
All throughout this time, I was working with my auditory-verbal therapist. Auditory Verbal Therapy strengthened my listening skills and ability to understand. In June of 2014, I received my second implant. All of this time, I thought I was weird or different. Recently I’ve learned that I shouldn’t be ashamed of my story and now I am proud to share it. My cochlear implants have helped me excel in many things and sometimes even do things others can’t.
